Fixing Slow Search Results: How We Eliminated a Critical YouTube Cache Bottleneck
The Hidden Problem Killing User Engagement
At first glance, everything seemed to be working.
Users were signing up, creating sessions, and exploring the platform. But one critical action was missing:
> No one was adding songs to the queue.
That’s a major issue for a collaborative music platform.
If users don’t add songs, they never experience the core value of the product.
So we dug deeper.
Where Users Were Dropping Off
We discovered a clear pattern:
- Users searched for songs
- The system took too long to respond
- Users abandoned the process
The root cause? Slow search result delivery when the cache missed.
Whenever a searched video wasn’t already in our database, the system had to:
1. Call the YouTube API
2. Process the response
3. Store results in the cache
4. Reload the cache
5. Finally display results
This meant users had to wait far longer than expected—often 500ms to over 1 second, even though the YouTube API itself responded in about 200ms.
In modern UX terms, that delay is unacceptable.
The Real Bottleneck (And Why It Was Subtle)
The issue wasn’t the API.
It was our own cache logic.
We were doing something fundamentally wrong:
> We made users wait for backend optimizations that were only meant for future performance.
Specifically:
- 5 sequential POST requests (one per video)
- Each taking ~50–100ms
- Followed by a full cache reload
All of this happened before showing results to the user.
This is a classic mistake: putting non-critical operations on the critical path.
The Fix: Instant Rendering, Background Processing
The solution was simple in concept—but powerful in impact:
> Show results immediately. Handle everything else in the background.
What We Changed
- Removed sequential cache writes
- Executed all cache writes in parallel
- Moved cache updates off the critical path
- Rendered search results immediately after API response
Instead of this:

We now do this:

→ cache writes (parallel, background)
→ cache reload (afterwards)
```
The Performance Impact
The difference was dramatic.
Before:
- ~200ms (API)
- + 250–500ms (sequential cache writes)
- + additional delay from cache reload
→ Total: up to 1 second+
After:
- ~200ms (API only visible to user)
→ Results feel instant
Meanwhile:
- Cache still updates correctly
- Writes are ~5x faster (parallelized)
- Future searches remain optimized
Why This Matters More Than You Think
This wasn’t just a technical improvement.
It directly impacted user behavior.
Before:
- Users experienced friction
- They abandoned the search
- They never added songs
After:
- Search feels fast and responsive
- Users stay engaged
- The core feature becomes usable
This is a key lesson:
> Performance isn’t just about speed—it’s about enabling user actions.
The Bigger UX Lesson
There’s a fundamental rule in modern application design:
> Never block the user for work they don’t care about.
Caching is important—but users don’t care about it.
They care about:
- Seeing results instantly
- Adding songs quickly
- Enjoying the experience
Everything else should happen behind the scenes.
What We Didn’t Change (On Purpose)
Not every delay is bad.
We intentionally kept:
- A 300ms input debounce
→ prevents excessive API calls
- Background cache refresh logic
→ keeps future searches fast
- AI suggestions running after results
→ enhances experience without blocking
Optimization is about balance, not blindly removing delays.
From Bottleneck to Breakthrough
Fixing this issue unlocked a critical part of the product:
> Users can now actually add songs to the queue.
That single improvement transforms the platform from:
- “Interesting idea”
to
- “Actually usable product”
Final Thoughts
Small technical decisions can have massive product impact.
A few misplaced `await` statements created a bottleneck that prevented users from experiencing the core value of the platform.
By rethinking the flow and prioritizing user experience, we turned a slow, frustrating interaction into an instant and engaging one.
